Coach Paul Banks
My coaching philosophy is centered on empowering my players. I aim to instill a strong work ethic and positive values in the hopes that our players learn to make smart decisions for themselves and for their teammates. I want to develop intelligent, versatile players that are well equipped to play the modern game. We will achieve this through hard work and a respectful interplay between the players and coaches. Players will learn to problem solve, think through the game, be unselfish, treat their teammates right, and execute at a high level.
I’ve coached youth basketball off and on for over 20 years, most recently as a coach for Brownell Talbot. My passion has been developing players. For a period of time, local groups like the Y would enlist me to coach the “leftovers” team that was cobbled together but lacked a coach. I took pride in developing these players and giving them a chance to enjoy the game. Similarly, this past season Brownell Talbot moved up a division, and I worked to modernize their offense with a five out scheme.
My own playing days included two years as a starter for Millard West followed by a short period of time as a college player. I learned later than most the challenges of being a student athlete at the collegiate level. For our players with college basketball as a goal, I feel I can offer perspective on the academic side of that equation, too, as I was both recruited for basketball and ended up earning a JD and an MBA.
